What inspires us

Devarayanadurga, a place of reverence and belief, forms the backdrop for our carbon positive, rainwater harvested, agro-forest. We would love to meet and share our experience…

Our roots
We have generations of association with Tumkur and surrounding areas. Though our ancestors were farmers, but one whole generation skipped farming. It now feels like we are first time farmers, but we have a zest to give back to our land!

Sun and Rain fed farm
We are investing in ensuring that we are able to run “off-the-grid”. Our lake collects rain water and ensures that there is adequate water for the flora and fauna that calls our farm home. We also generate our own power for irrigation using solar energy and will shortly start exporting electricity to the grid.

Creating a thriving agro-forrest
It was an eye-popping moment when someone told that Mango trees are planted 20 feet apart in a contemporary farm, while in a forest, trees grow 3 feet apart without any help from a human. This started our journey In discovering how to increase our tree cover while still generating food.
So where are we?
Our orchard based on our core principles around sustainability is about 65 KMs from Bangalore towards Tumkur, just a few KMs from Devarayanadurga’s famous Narasimha temple and the sacred Namada Chilume.
Nestled in the divine hills, we consider it our duty to protect our beautiful surroundings.

Zero-energy, natural water filtration unit
All of the irrigation in the farm uses the water from the lake, however, we did have a borewell for drinking water. Even though that is <1% of our total water consumption, we always wanted to break that last connection to consuming borewell water. As luck would have it, the borewell motor broke down. Despite…

Controlling weed in the orchard
As the monsoon ends, our biggest challenge has been a sea of overgrown grass. We immediately faced a dilemma: our farmer friends advised tilling, but the Indian and Japanese natural farming principles we follow advise against it to protect soil life. We truly value this ground cover for aerating soil and attracting beneficial insects. But…

How we deal with pests/disease the organic way
It was bound to happen. Sooner or later on any farm, the pests come knocking. For us, with our deep commitment to 100% natural and organic farming, reaching for a chemical spray was never an option. So, how do we prepare for the inevitable? The answer came from a conversation that completely changed how we…

Is it just a coincidence!
Just look at the photo… Can you see Lord Vishnu lying down? Is it just a coincidence that the Sun is setting at this feet? I believe not, we are truly blessed to live in this divine setting. This is the view of Devarayanadurga that we get on most days.

What did we plant in our Miyawaki fruit orchard?
Our farming philosophy is based on a minimal intervention method to create a sustainable dense agro forest. Our hope is that a selection of local hardy variety of fruit trees will lead to minimal use of water and improved soil structure over time. Based on this, here is the sample of the list of sapling…
